Archaeology Notes

HY31SE 31 353 127

A cist was found in a field NW of Torrieday during ploughing. The owner Margaret Horrie informed Museum Officer Bryce Wilson who notified NOSAS. Excavation took place and the cist was examined.

Orientated NE-SW. Measuring internally, 1m long by 0.72m wide by 0.64m deep with sides and a bottom. Capstone shattered by plough, probably 1.15m by 1.3m. A stone had been placed under the W corner to raise it level at the top, the NW flag had a notch in it's N end filled in with two horizontal stones and the NE stone overlapped the SE at the top with a manufactured tongue. Box construction, no intrusion of earth and no bones found. A thin layer of dark brown humic sludge was concentrated in two patches towards the SW end.

J W Hedges (NOSAS), PSAS 110, 1978-80
