The Hanging Stone, on the summit of Gallows Hill, is a large upright stone where executions took place in early times. East of it is The Pit, now a small pool but formerly of considerable extent, where lesser crimes were punished.

Name Book 1871.

The Hanging Stone, measuring c 2.3m high by c 0.6m square, and situated at a wall junction with the walls built around it, and The Pit are as described in the Ordnance Survey Name Book (ONB).

The names and traditions associated with them are still known locally.
