HY31SE 28 36106 14147

Small circular Norcon type concrete pillbox built into the remains of a broch (HY31SE 4).

(Undated) information in NMRS.

This small Norcon type concrete pillbox is situated on the top of a broch on the E side of the A966 road and annotated 'The Hillock' on Ordnance Survey maps, which stands at the N end of Finnstown. The entrance is through the roof and the interior is full of vegetation and rubbish.

Activities

Field Visit (July 1980)

A small concrete sniper position, circular, external

diameter 1.83m (exactly 6ft), built on summit of broch mound.

Walls are thin, of reinforced concrete, standing about 0.4m above

external ground level, with six horizontal loopholes for rifle,

evenly spaced around circumference. Access by hatch in flat

roof. Floor is sunken sufficiently to allow a man to stand up

inside.
