Archaeology Notes

NJ95SW 16 94 50.

Several small cairns containing burnt bones and urns, were removed c.1800 from along the top of the brae eastwards from Cairnrickles, a 19th century croft on the N slope of Knappertyhill, in the direction of South Auchmachar farm. The tenant of Braeside reports old pits or graves filled with black, fatty-like, earth, with small white bits of burnt bones, and pieces of burnt wood, found whilst digging holes for fence posts. From this we can see that the whole of the Auchmachar ridge had been studded with prehistoric remains.
