(NJ 9472 5474) Church (NR).

OS 6" map, (1959).

A church and family burial aisle were erected in 1620 by Thomas Fraser, proprietor of Strichen. The present parish church was built in 1799.

F H Groome 1901.

An old building, situated in the churchyard, is said to be the aisle of the former church, beneath which is the burial vault of the Frasers of Strichen.

Name Book 1870.

The burial vault is now in use as a tool-shed. An outside stair leads to an 18/19th century guard-chamber above, the N and E walls of which are considerably thicker than the other two. The N wall contains a blocked arch with, on the outside, a springer.

This wall continues to the east, 1.7m long and 0.7m high along the N edge of a vague rectangular platform in which the sexton has discovered traces of the old church.

A similar platform extends tothe N. of the vault and probably contains the foundations of an aisle.

Visited by OS (NKB) 20 March 1967.
