A collared Cinerary Urn was found in an embankment behind Howford Farm on 18th March 1970 by Mr G Coutts. It was in an inverted position about 3ft (0.9m) below the present ground surface, but its original depth was probably only 1-1 1/2ft (0.3 - 0.4m) below the surface. It contained the cremated remains of more than two individuals including one over 20 years and an infant of 2 years. The urn and the skeletal remains are now in the Anthropological Museum, University of Aberdeen (Accession nos. 240/28).

In 1984, a newly cut vertical embankment revealed the remains of a cremation pit, at NJ 953 574, about 1m below the present surface. The pit, 0.9m wide by 0.4m deep, contained cremated bone accompanied by burnt flints and 5 pieces of knob-shaped fired clay, possibly pin heads. These are perforated at the narrower end, and are 15 to 20mm long.
M Greig and J Inglis 1984.
Found eroding out of bank at NJ 953 547 after winter, a cinerary urn, buried base uppermost and containing a carefully organised cremation deposit, in which the skull bones had been placed first, followed by other larger bone fragments, and finally charcoal pieces. The pit had also been packed with pyre debris. The urn fragments have gone to the Anthropological Museum, University of Aberdeen.
I Shepherd 1987.
