HY31SE 10 3522 1470.
(Centred: HY 352 145) There is a mound, 45ft in diameter and nearly 4ft high, on the south shoulder of Snaba Hill at just over 200 ft OD. An excavation has been made in the top.
A short distance to the NE are other mounds. One, 20ft in diameter and 2ft high, stands on the edge of the hill above Horraldshay, while close beside it are two more of similar dimensions. About 100 yds to the south, but still on the brow of the hill, is another well-defined mound about 35ft in diameter and 4ft high.
None of the mounds show any distinctive features.
RCAHMS 1946.
The only mound located, at HY 3522 1470, is slightly oval on plan, measuring 14.0m by 12.0m and 1.2m in height. It is composed of earth and stone and has a flat top in which is traceable a ring of stones, set on edge and leaning outwards, around the west side. The mound is set at about 350ft OD.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS(NKB) 29 April 1966.
Field Visit (May 1981)
This tract of hill was cleared, ploughed and re-seeded in
1980. Many stones were removed including those on the mound of
which now no trace. The ploughing overrides the mound which is
truncated and reduced in height to about 0.7m. The mound as now
visible is entirely earthen and its exposed centre is being
further damaged by burrowing rabbits.
Information from Orkney SMR (RGL) May 81.
Field Visit (14 September 1993)
The Orkney Barrows Project noted that this bowl-shaped mound was still affected by rabbits. Measuring 13.0m in diameter and 0.7m in height, a possible kerb was visible on the W side. The topography masks the location of the mound in most directions, except to the W and NW, where it is visble for at least 2km. From this location, the Hill of Heddle is also visible.
