Watching Brief (May 2021 - October 2021)
NS 6526 7381 A watching brief was undertaken, between May and October 2021, during the demolition of Lairdsland Primary School and the development of the land. It was required due to the site’s close proximity to Roman and medieval remains in Peel Park. A watching brief was undertaken during the grubbing out of existing foundations, removal of the car park/playground and all groundbreaking works in relation to the new buildings, including site investigation works and the excavation of service and foundation trenches. On average 1m of made ground was present across much of the development area, which lay on top of the natural subsoil. In the northeastern part of the development area, a well or sump of unknown date was exposed. The well was constructed from un-frogged red brick and existed to 2.7m in diameter and 3.4m in depth. A 0.8m diameter metal pipe had been bored through the concrete base while the inner brick face was coated with a skim of black silt or soot. The well/sump was preserved in situ.
