Hermitage House, now demolished, was utilised during World War I as an auxiliary hospital. It had a capacity for 58 patients who were sent from Stobhall Hospital in Glasgow. The house had been bought by the Town Council for #3,750 to create a public park. After the war the house served as an annex for Hermitage School until new buildings were completed in 1926. The house was demolished in 1963 and a park shelter now stands on the site.
