(NJ 9003 3570) Stone Circle (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map, (1959)

One stone of whin, 3'10" high, now built into a dyke, is all that remains of a circle about 33 yds in diameter which in 1838 is said to have been composed of 19 standing stones. Only one stone remained by 1868.

Name Book 1868; F R Coles 1903.

Five or seven stones, not in a circle, but a straight line, were remembered in 1895 as having existed about the beginning of the 19th century.

J Spence 1895.

The stone measuring 1.2m high, 1.4m wide and 0.8m wide faces E-W. This orientation suggests that the stone is not in situ if it has been in the SSE of the circle as suggested by Coles' plan.

Stone surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (I S S) 1 March 1973.
