The original inn on this site was called the New Inn, and is clearly visible on, for example, Thomson's map of Ayrshire. In spite of many later alterations and additions, a remnant of the Dumfries Arms, once a renowned hotel, is still visible. Along with those at the Square, it afforded a resting-place for travellers by coach and, later, by train. It was here that Walter Scott stayed while passing through Cumnock (see p 18).
