The parish church now standing figures 14.B & 16 was built in 1867. On its north side is the family vault of the Marquesses of Bute (Earls of Dumfries), at whose expense the church was built. It replaced an old parish church which was built in 1754. This, in its turn, was on the site of the original parish church, which was in existence before Cumnock became a burgh in 1509. This older church is to be seen prominently on early maps of the area, as it was the focal point of the burgh figure 16. Although major development here is unlikely, any alterations involving ground disturbance within the standing building, for example the insertion of new services, may reveal remains of the 1754 structure which the present church replaced, or even of the earlier medieval church, of which so little is known.
