(NS 66013 41683) Trumpeter's Well (NR)

OS 1:10000 map (1976)

The Trumpeter's Well, now filled up, is traditionally associated with the death of a trumpeter retreating from Drumclog (1679) and the site of his burial is still pointed out.

Name Book 1858.

The "Trumpeter's Well" marks the site of the graves of several soldiers, amongst them a trumpeter who was overtaken and slain by the Covenanters after the battle of Drumclog in 1679 (M Gebbie 1880). The well, which is now protected by a 9' high circular building, is still in use, water from it supplying the nearby farm of Hillhead. The name is still known locally.

Visited by OS (RD) 17 March 1966.
