Archaeology Notes

NJ91NW 6 unlocated

For Belhelvie, Old Parish Church (NJ 9693 1963), see NJ91NE 1.

Two pre-Reformation churches with burial grounds which existed in this parish have now disappeared.

Several small silver coins of no great value or antiquity were found in the foundations of one of them.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845 (Rev A Forsyth 1840).

Enquiries at Belhelvie manse revealed no knowledge of the churches.

(Cf NJ91NW 9 and NJ91NE 8.)

Visited by OS (NKB) 23 March 1964.

The removal of two pre-reformation churches with burial-grounds mentioned in the New Statistical Account for the parish of Belhelvie almost certainly refers to two of the three documented chapels that are known to have existed within the parish in addition to the Parish Church (NJ91NE 1). It is not known which of the three is meant, but those recorded are: Chapel Park, Belhelvie (NJ91NW 9), Hatton of Milden (NJ91NE 8) and Chapel Park, Ardo (NJ92SW 8).

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 11 November 1996.
