NJ91NW 10 c. 94 17

There is a ground greenstone axe, measuring 8 by 3 ins, from Belhelvie (NJ 94 17) in the Museum of the Free Church College, Aberdeen.

J Anderson and G F Black 1888.

Another stone axe from Belhelvie, measuring 3 3/4 by 2 3/4 ins, was an item in the collection of John Rae, Aberdeen, sold in 1892.

The Free Church College no longer exists and the collection is now in the Anthropological Museum, Marischal College, Aberdeen University.

Visited by OS (NKB) 20 March 1964.

In addition to those axes which have been noted elsewhere, at least six more axes from Belhelvie parish have been recorded.

There are three stone axes in the collections of Marischal College:

1. ABDUA:14329. This axe is made of schist and measures 102mm in length by 53mm in breadth and 25mm in thickness.

2. ABDUA: 19875. This axe is described simply as being of quartzite with a splayed blade and a rounded butt in the print-out received from the Museum.

3. ABDUA: 19937. From Belhelvie Lodge (NJ c. 943 170), this axe is described simply as measuring 99mm in length, being made of schist and having a splayed blade and a narrow butt in the print-out received from the Museum.

(Formerly numbered as NJ91NW 11). In Aberdeen Regional Museum (now the City Art Gallery and Museum) there is a stone axe, 3 1/2" x 1 3/4" from Belhelvie (NJ 94 17); part of the Dr Johnson collection acquired in 1967.
