Archaeology Notes

NS76SE 64.00 From 7669 6253 to 7500 6426.

The complete section of this canal is shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1864, sheet viii) and on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1899, sheet viiiSW). A stretch of disused canal from NS 7669 6253 to NS 7521 6380 is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1991) and on the OS Basic Scale raster map (ND).

The canal starts as a feeder from the North Calder Water, but rapidly becomes a navigable width heading NW. It subsequently turns N, then W and gradually N again, passing a number of former coal pits and other industrial sites.

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 8 November 2001.
