Publication Account (1981)
The first known schoolmaster of Kilmarnock was John Anderson who died in 1629 ( McKay, 1909, 153). The schoolhouse, located at the corner of Green Street next to the Old Corn Exchange, was apparently rebuilt after a 1752 fire (Paterson, 1866, iii, 393). By the end of the century Kilmarnock could boast a grammar school and English School, and a number of private schools including one for young girls instructing them in the arts of sewing and weaving as well as other handiwork (Hamilton, 1881, 6).
