Archaeology Notes

NM65NW 45 6238 5800

Two buildings, situated towards the base of a NW-facing slope above and the shore, were recorded during a pre-afforestation survey on the Rahoy Estate. The S building, which is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyll-shire 1875, sheet xl), measures 8m from NNE to SSW by 5m over drystone walls. It stands up to 1m in height and has rounded corners. A possible entrance, 0.7m wide, lies in the centre of the NW wall.

The N building comprises a rectangular platform measuring 10m from NE to SW by 4m and is 1m deep. A turf-covered bank defines the NW side of the building which is possibly a barn or a byre.

C Lowe and J Wordsworth (Headland Archaeology) 25 May 1999; NMRS MS 899/147, no.10

The S building was previously noted under NM65NW 26. It is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire 1875, sheet xl) but not on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974).
