Mount Zion Church was designed in 1888 by Robert Alexander Bryden to form an ecclesiastical centrepiece of the village. The large gothic church has a very prominent 5 storey baronial belltower. William Quarrier developed the village from 1870 onwards to house abandoned and orphaned chuildren in a series of villas and provide facilities for their well being. The village continued to expand and the church was extended c.1900 and c.1910 to cope with the growing number of children. In the late 20th century with changes in the approach to childcare a number of the buildings in the village have become redundant.
