Archaeology Notes

HY30SW 6 3248 0400.

A chapel at Bay of Myre is listed by the Commission but is derived from Clouston. (Also from Mr I Omand, Orakirk in the Orkney Herald, 29 August 1906).

RCAHMS 1946; J S Clouston 1918.

Mrs Craigie of Myre, Orphir, indicated where she had been told that there had once been a chapel, at HY 3248 0400, and added that the spot could not be ploughed because of the large amount of stone in the soil. The site, an amorphous grass-covered platform in a level pasture field close by the Bay of Myre, merges with the surrounding field on its S. and W. sides, but forms a distinct corner, 0.7m. high, at the NE. A scatter of large stones lies on and around the platform.

Visited by OS(RL) 10 May 1966.

Activities

Field Visit (1998)

A lumpy amorphous mound, up to 0.5m high, is located in one corner of a pasture field. It lies 5m from the coast edge, from which it is separated by a trackway. Up to 15% of the surface of the mound, on the east side has been damaged by cattle poaching. It is alleged that a chapel was once located in this area and that the mound may represent the remains of this structure. Previous recorders have noted the presence of stone in the area and report that, according to a local informant, the ground could not be ploughed on account of this stoniness. The area is now very overgrown and while there are no indications that the mound is of archaeological interest, survey and assessment would be required to determine the nature of remains which are present.
