Sir Basil Spence

Building Notes

Mr Campbell commissioned Basil Spence & Partners (Edinburgh) to build a house on Carneddens Road in Craigton c.1953. It is thought that the house was completed between 1954 and 1955.

The practice designed a bungalow which was T-shaped on plan with the public rooms facing the views to the west. The accommodation included a living room, dining room, kitchen, four bedrooms, a playroom, two bathrooms and a garage.

Campbell House is one of several bungalows completed by the practice, which also included a Cottage for Sandison at Longniddry, and houses for Brown and N E C Campbell at Dunbar.

Archive Details and Summary

The Sir Basil Spence Archive holds one photograph which shows a view of the bungalow from the garden. There are also 38 drawings, which include site plans showing the surrounding countryside and room layouts as well as plans, sections, elevations and details.

This text was written as one of the outputs of the Sir Basil Spence Archive Project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, 2005-08.
