Archaeology Notes

NJ82SE 3 8596 2131.

(NJ 859 2131) St Mary's Well (NR).

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1928)

This is a spring near the site of the chapel (NJ82SE 2). The proprietor has erected over it a small circular arbour with a seat round the interior.

Name Book 1866.

St Mary's Well has no circular arbour nor seat although it is in the centre of a paved area. The well probably derived its name from St Mary's Chapel, (NJ82SE 2) although there is no local tradition to connect the two.

Visited by OS (RD) 18 March 1964.

St Mary's Well lies 20m to the S of the site of the chapel (NJ82SE 2), on a levelled terrace beside the 'Big Burn'. The well is retained by a circular rubble and mortar wall 1m in diameter and contains a step.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, IF), 7 November 1996.
