Architect: Alexander McGibbon
The Brown Institute was recorded by the Threatened Buildings Survey prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site. The building is in a poor condition and was last used in 2011 as a museum that then moved to the Town Hall. The Brown Institute has been on the Buildings at Risk Register since October 2012.
Alexander McGibbon designed the building in 1904 which originally included a billiard room, library and reading room. It was gifted to the town by Provost Andrew Brown whose family managed the William Simons’ Shipyard.
