Publication Account (2008)
Principal among the buildings to survive from this period are large villas on the outskirts of town which have escaped redevelopment. A good example is Arthurlie House (fig 16), a fine villa built in 1780 and bought in 1818 by the master of Levern Mill. These handsome structures and their garden were a conspicuous display of the money being made by some sections of society from their investment in the new factories. Some of the stone for the building of Arthurlie House came from a vault elsewhere on the estate which was said to contain a skeleton. This is a category B listed building.
