The name applies to a mass of rock known variously as Granage Stone, Grenegle Stone, Chronicle Stone etc but Groaning Stone is the proper name. It is said that this was the spot where Comyn, (Earl of Buchan) fell when pursued by Bruce's troops at the Battle of Barra (NJ72NE 4).

Name Book 1867.

Groaning Stone, name confirmed, a natural boulder, roughly triangular measuring 2.0m wide and 1.0m thick by 1.6 m high.
