(NJ 8982 2888) Dumbreck Castle (NR) (site of)
OS 6" map, (1959).
We may recognise the work of Thomas Leper, architect of Tolquhon (NJ82NE 1) in the vanished castle of Dumbreck: for among the curved fragments used in building Mains of Dumbreck (NJ 89 28) there is the left hand orifice of a triplet gunloop of the characteristic Tolquhon pattern.
W D Simpson 1948.
The site is now under cultivation and no trace of the castle survives. The gunloop is built into the E N E facing gable of Mains of Dumbreck farm-house. Another carved fragment is built into the N facing wall of a farm outbuilding at NJ 8971 2877.
Visited by OS (RL) 6 April 1971.
Nothing is visible of the castle that stood about 120m NE of Mains of Dumbreck farmsteading (NJ82NE 57) and its site is now under cultivation. There are several architectural fragments built into the steading.
Visited by RCAHMS (ATW, JRS), 28 January 1997.
