(Area: NJ 800 140) Tumuli (NR)

OS 6" map (1938)

On the large moor between Kinellar and Kintore there are a great number of cairns. Some of them contained only bones and skulls, while others included urns containing ashes and calcined bones placed on beds formed of clay (hardened by fire) 'and the hillocks made up of soil from a distance'.

NSA 1845

The mounds on Hill of Boghead are all of stone and turf, and, where not obscured by gorse and broom or entirely destroyed can be seen to measure between 4.0m and 6.0m in diameter and 0.3m to 1.0m in height.

Despite the finds recorded above, the majority of these mounds would appear to be no more than field clearance heaps.

Visited by OS (JLD) 8 November 1961.

These mounds are situated across the boundary between the parishes of Kinnellar and Kintore. They are set on a moderate N-facing slope at an altitude of 90m OD.

NMRS, MS/712/79.

Five small cairns (NJ 7994 1410) are all that remain from an extensive group that once existed on the Hill of Boghead. They are situated at the W end of a small wood about 400m NE of Lower Boghead farmsteading, and the largest measures 3m in diameter. The remaining areas annotated 'field-system' on the 1:10,000 map (1992) have been incorporated into cultivated fields.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 2 October 2002.

The area indicates extends across portions of both Kinellar and Kintore parishes.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 22 February 2005.
