Architecture Notes

NS46NE 77 centred 47255 68183

A series of 'cottages' in both India Drive and Allands Drive built for the India Tyre Factory, who took over the former Beardmore's Airship Factory (NS46NE 30.00) in 1930, on the edge of the factory site. The houses were built for key workers take the form of ' bungalow' for management and 'four-in-a-block' cottages for key workers . The India Drive housing was designed by J J Craig & Son of St Vincent Street, Glasgow around 1929 and built by John Train & Co. Ltd also of Glasgow.

The India houses were rented to workers under tenancy agreements and a few are still in 'as built' condition, the rest having been modernised.
