Tarfside, Maule Memorial Church was formerly Tarfside Free Church
Maule Memorial Church, Tarfside was recorded as part of the Threatened Buildings Survey. The survey was prompted by the proposed closure and sale of the church as part of the re-organisation of the Church of Scotland’s estate.
The church was designed by J, WH & JM Hay of Liverpool in 1857. It was built on land gifted by Fox Maule Ramsay 2nd Lord Panmure in 1852. It was built as Lochlee Free Church becoming the Maule Memorial Church in 1930 when the Free Church and the Church of Scotland united. It is now part of Edzell Parish. The builder was Robert Dinnie. The architectural style is unusual Saxon Romanesque, an Early Christian style suitable for this isolated picturesque highland location. The rubble stonework has a distinctive herringbone pattern and incised symbols adorn the south porch entrance archway.
The interior has a collar-braced roof. The pulpit and communion table are by J Raitt with carving by James Bremner who also carved the font. All three items came from Edzell United Free Church built in 1901 which was demolished in the late 20th century. The stained glass is by James Ballentine & Son 1881 and commemorates Fox Maule Ramsay, Earl of Dalhousie and Dr Thomas Guthrie.
Internal alterations were carried out in the 19990’s including the insertion of a toilet in a free-standing pod. There are proposals to convert the church into a house by Voigt Architects planning reference 24/00183/LBC.
