This island lighthouse was established (by D A Stevenson) in 1893, being situated on the seawards edge of the sands of Auchencairn Bay to mark the W edge of Urr Waterfoot (the mouth of the River Urr), Rough Firth and the approach to Dalbeattie. It is accessible across the sands at low water.
In recent years, the tower originally bult has been demolished and replaced by an aluminium frame supporting a small lamp.
