In 1865, whilst a party of workmen were engaged on excavating a foundation for cothouses on the Kinaldie Estate, they turned up 'Several Stone Coffins' containing human remains, together with an urn containing ashes.

Four cists were found when removing a natural dry sandy mound about 200yds north of the 'Gouk Stone' (NJ81NW 20). One was found about 1837. The others were found in April 1854 when the mound was being removed to fill in the Old Canal (Lin 112). Each cist contained human bones and an urn. One of these bones was 4ft 10in long by 2ft 5in and contained human bones and the fragments of a beaker. The skull and beaker from this cist were presented to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland on April 14 1856 by A Watt (Accession Nos. ET 35 and EG 28 respectively).
