Standing Building Recording (25 February 2019)
NJ 21388 62767 A historic building survey was carried out, 25 February 2019, of former shops and domestic buildings located at 184-188 High Street. The works have been completed as part of listed building consent and planning consent for the intended demolition and reconstruction of the High Street frontage.
184-188 High Street illustrates the continued use of the Scottish medieval burgh settlement pattern. Built from around 1800 it shows the social development of Elgin's town centre and how people lived and worked in it. Its exterior form and built fabric are characteristic of a traditional burgh backland building of this time and survives relatively unaltered, which is unusual. The building is an integral part of Elgin's historic town centre and its well-preserved medieval burgh settlement pattern, with its width reflecting the historic burgage plot. The buildings, other than their basic form and structure, have been adapted and modernised over the last 200 years to accommodate more recent requirements.
