Architecture Notes

NMRS REFERENCE

Dunnichen House is depicted on the OS second edition map (1923 Forfarshire, sheet XXIX) and has since been demolished. Information from RCAHMS (S.A.G) August 2001.

Activities

Photographic Record (1 January 2010 - 1 November 2012)

Dunnichen lies approximately 1.5 miles west of Letham on an unnumbered road off the B9128.

The house was built in the first quarter of the 18th century and was demolished in 1966.

The estate was extensively improved in the second half of the 18th century. In 1859 – a walled garden is shown NE of the house. A second walled garden is not shown in the 1st edition OS map at 25” to mile but is shown in the 2nd edition. The road had been removed so that the walled garden was near to the house on the W with no intervening public route. This shows glasshouses within the garden and a slip garden outside on the SW. In 1922, the slip garden is no longer shown.

A new house was built after the mansion was demolished and now sits in the original garden.

Researched by the Garden History Society in Scotland (Angus Landscape Survey Group), November, 2011.
