Archaeology Notes

(NJ 8834 0279) Cairn (NR).

OS 6" map (1938)

This cairn is composed solely of loose stones and is 17.0 to 20.0m in diameter, with a height of 5.0m. Although many stones have apparently been removed from it it is still in a good state of preservation. There are traces of possible kerb-stones around the perimeter and, on the eastern segment, a possible berm.

Visited by OS (JLD) 31 July 1952.

This large cairn, which comprises a mass of loose boulders and measures up to 20m in diameter by 4m in height, is now entirely surrounded by a modern housing estate. No kerb stones are visible and the possible berm noted by the OS on the E side of the cairn is probably the result of recent stone-robbing.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, ATW), 24 February 1997.
