(NJ 8551 0233) Tumulus (NR)

OS 6" map (1902)

At Binghill there is a large tumulus, said to have been at one time the burial-place of a local family.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845

This cairn, of large granite blocks, lies on a natural slope in the wooded policies of Binghill. It measures about 8.0m by 6.0m and about 1.8m high. There is no evidence of a kerb or ditch.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 20 November 1961

The cairn described by OS is recent and not the site referred to by earlier sources, but some 80m to the NE is a cairn. Situated in a plantation and measuring at least 6m in diameter and 0.5m in height. There is a possible kerbstone on the SE. This may be the 'tumulus' referred to in NSA.

Visited by RCAHMS (JBS) 9 November 1983.

This cairn, which lies about 30m to the E of the recumbent stone circle NJ80SE 16, measures 10m in diameter and 0.3m in height; a hollow at its centre indicates a previous disturbance.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, ATW), 26 February 1997.

The cairn mentioned in the NSA is probably that situated roughly 55m E of the recumbent stone circle to which JBS (1983) and JRS, ATW (1997) refer. The cairn to which the OS refer is situated roughly 42m SSW of the recumbent stone circle (NJ80SE 200).

Information from RCAHMS (ATW) 9 February 2007
