NN02NE 24.01 NN 0637 2520 Creag Thulach Kiln-barn
On the bracken-grown W slopes of Creag Thulach there is an extensive area of rig cultivation, around the edges of which there are a turf building, a kiln-barn (described under NN02NE 24.01) and four huts; one of the huts appears to have been reused as the site of a kiln. The rigs each measure about 2m to 3m in width, and they are contained within an earth and stone dyke that encloses about 9ha (centred on NN 0622 2539). The building is situated immediately beyond the N sector of this dyke at NN 0623 2552 (LORN96 246); internally it measures 10.3m in length and tapers in breadth from 3.6m at the SW end to 3.2m on the NE. The wall, which is 1m thick and 0.4m high, is built of turf on stone footings, and the interior is divided into two compartments. One hut is situated 100m to the WNW of the building at NN 0613 2556 (LORN96 245). It measures 4.8m by 2.5m within a wall reduced to stone footings. The other three huts are situated about 150m SW of the building, on the N side of an unnamed burn. Two of them are situated close together at NN 0613 2545 NN 0612 2545 and measure respectively 4.9m by 2.1m (LORN96 249) and 4.6m by 2.2m (LORN96 250) internally. The third hut, on a terrace immediately above the burn at NN 0615 2541, measures 7.2m from N to S by 3.4m transversely over a robbed-out stone wall (LORN96 248). A small stone-built structure, with an opening on the N, lies within the interior; it is probably a kiln and measures 1.1m in diameter within walls 0.8m thick and 0.4m high.

Field Visit (December 2021)
A pre-afforestation walkover survey was conducted over two parcels of land near Kilchrenan, in December 2020. During the walkover 82 sites of archaeological or historical interested were recorded within or adjacent to the boundaries of the two areas. The sites comprised banks, enclosures and walls; structures and more ephemeral possible structures; farmsteads and kilns; areas of rig cultivation (more were observed on the aerial photographs than during the survey); quarries; a shooting hide; a walker’s cairn; and tracks.
