Designed by Thomas Mackenzie and built in 1850-51. T-plan single storey Italianate building in harled rubble with tooled ashlar margins and a rubble east elevation. The building has a seven-bay north elevation with entrances to east and south, that at the south masked by a gabled porch. The windows are squared-headed except in the gables, where the windows are round-headed. There is a round-headed bellcote at the south gable under a small deep-eaved slate roof. Coped wallhead stacks; slate roofs with deep eaves.
The building was in use as a drill hall by the time of the 2nd edition 1:2500 map.
In 1914 the hall was the drill station for "B" Company, 6th battalion Gordon Highlanders.
