(NJ 7046 5485) Carlinkist Cairn (NR) (Stone coffin found).

OS 6" map, Banffshire, 2nd ed., (1928)

Several urns containing ashes were found in the Carlinkist Cairn. The stone called 'Carlin Kist', contiguous to the cairn, is supposed to be the remains of a burial chamber.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845.

Some years ago a cist was found in Carlinkist Cairn. The adajacent stone, from which the cairn derived its name was removed 'many years ago'.

Name Book 1867.

Carlin-kist-Cairn is a long, low mound. The tenant of the adjoining farm remembered seeing part of the Cairn and a big Standing Stone but could not say when they were removed.

F R Coles 1906.

Published entry has been amended to read 'Carlinkist Cairn Long Cairn'.

OS 6" map annotated (Anon, Undated).

This is a low mutilated, grass-covered mound of earth and stones measuring approx. 13.0m NNW-SSE by 13.3m transversely. The mound is 0.8m high and has a small round depression 3.0 metres in diameter and 0.3m deep on its top. The present condition of this feature suggests a round cairn rather than a long cairn.

Revised at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 17 September 1964.

No change.

Visited by OS (NKB) 12 January 1968.
