Archaeology Notes

For nearby steading (NJ 7754 4082), see NJ74SE 10.

(Location cited as NJ 777 407). Mid 19th century. A most unusual piece of apparatus, consisting of an all-iron overshot wheel 3ft 6ins (1.06m) wide by 10ft (3.05m) diameter in a rubble house, with geared-up drive to a pulley from which a wire rope, carried on poles for about 450 ft (137m) transmitted power to a farm steading. The ploes have now been cut down, but one still survives. Preserved by the owners, who also have a large collection of agricultural machinery.

J R Hume 1977.
