Cist Found AD 1848 (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1959)

A stone 6 1/2' high, by 4' and 2' wide, situated about 4 1/2 chains south-east of the summit of Monk's Hill. Believed to be the remains of a stone circle, it was lying down for some years, until raised into an upright position by the proprietor, Mr Chalmers.

Some 40 years ago (c.1830), there were 3 stones, 2 of which were removed for building purposes; whilst in 1848 a cist about 1 1/2' square, made of 6 stone flags, and containing human bones, was found here.

Name Book 1871.
