Archaeology Notes

NJ72SE 63 c. 77 21.

In Inverurie Museum are a plain stone ball from the Inverurie district (Accession no: AS 14), donated in 1960 by Mrs C G Reid, 7 Jackson St, Inverurie; and a carved stone ball, also from the Inverurie district (Accession no: AS 17), on loan from Mr A J Reid, 10 Carnarvon Rd., Barnet, Herts.

Information from Accession Register, Inverurie Museum.

A number of other carved stone balls from Inverurie (NJ 77 21) are recorded:

(i) with twelve knobs, was in the collection of D Anderson, Aberdeen, sold in 1898 (Anderson 1898).

(ii) in Glasgow Art Galleries and Museum (Accession no: 55/96) has six

knobs with worked interspaces. The remainder are in Inverurie Museum: (iii) (Acc. No: AS 17 - from Inverurie district, noted above) has six knobs, not very prominent.

(iv) (Accession no: AS 20) has seven knobs.

(v) (Accession no: AS 16) 'found near Inverurie' has eight knobs and is decorated with hatchings and incised lines.

D Anderson 1898; D N Marshall 1979.

The collection of Inverurie Museum has been re-catalogued, but the new catalogue is incomplete and there is no easy system of identifying the new accession numbers of this stone ball and three carved stone balls.
