The Square in Huntly is one of the most pleasing townscapes in Scotland. It has a lived-in, human yet gracious feel which derives in part from the mix of granites and other local stones which catch the steely northern light, but mostly from the outstanding combination of grandeur (Clydesdale Bank), novelty (Gordon Arms) or sheer Gothic exuberance (Brander Library) of the buildings themselves. Most typical are plain, Georgian houses in coursed granite with cobbled pends and flagstoned area to rear. Many of the later Huntly houses are good, restrained two-storey, three-window affairs, like their country cousins, the Improvement farmhouses; quietly rewarding.
