Archaeology Notes

NJ71NW 25 c. 7350 1666.

NJ 736 167. Short Cist, Paradise Road, Kemnay: Situated in a sandy ridge just S of Kemnay quarry, this cist was damaged during preparation of the ground for new houses. Aligned E-W, only the E end slab and two small slabs forming part of the N and S sides were left in position. The one on the N had fallen in antiquity crushing the beaker. The contracted body had lain on its right side with the head at the W end. On the sandy floor of the grave were found three 'thumbnail' scrapers, three flint knives and two flint flakes.

A A Woodham 1974.

The precise findspot of this short cist cannot be ascertained locally; it occurs within a housing estate now completed. According to Mr G Andrews it was found at approximately NJ 7350 1666 and was destroyed shortly after its discovery.

Visited by OS (NKB) 18 August 1976; (undated) information from Mr G Andrews, Wellbank, Kemnay.

The collection of Inverurie Museum has been re-catalogued, but the new catalogue is incomplete and there is no easy system of identifying the new accession number of these artefacts. The accession number of the sherds of the beaker is PEHMS: I 6974, but the accession numbers of the three flint scrapers, three flint knives and two flint flakes are not known.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS) 7 June 2001.
