Site Management (28 May 2010)

Single storey lodge, L-plan with extension. Snecked rubble, harled extension, painted margins and chamfered rusticated quoins, slate roof. 2- and 4-pane sash and case windows. Moulded eaves, acroteria gables, moulded stack. W ELEVATION: corniced rectangular porch in re-entrant with pier and pilasters, entrance door, single window at left. Canted window with cornice at advanced gable right; small panel in gable. Window at set-back extention at right, cat-slide roof. N GABLE: tripartite window, cartouche at gable. WALL AND GATEPIERS: 4 painted gatepiers with bases, carved panels and heavily moulded stylised caps. Low flanking walls, part quadrant, terminating in 2 plain pyramidal capped piers. Formerly with gates and railings.

Originally lodge to Panmuir Villa, latterly known as Armistead Child Development Centre (Historic Environment Scotland List Entry)

Prior to 1930 Panmure Villa was owned by James Smieton who ran the Panmure Works in Carnoustie, est 1857, who had a reputation for providing facilities for his workers, including a Literary Institute. The site was purchased by the Trustees of Lord Armistead for utilisation as a convalescent home for children in 1930. The building was extended by Thoms & Wilkie architects and opened as Armitstead Convalescent Home for Children in 1932. In 1948 the unit became a children's home, Armitstead Children's Hospital.
