Archaeology Notes

NJ71NW 16 c. 74 16.

There are two carved stone balls, both from the Kemnay - Kinellar area (NJ 73 16) in Aberdeen Regional Museum. One is 2 1/4" diameter with 6 lobes, and the other with 9 ornamented bosses. (320:1)

Information from Accession Register, Aberdeen Regional Museum.

These two carved stone balls are held in Aberdeen Regional Museum [no accession numbers cited]. That from 'Kemnay (probable)' is of type 4a [six knobs, not very prominent]; that from 'Kemnay' has nine knobs and is of type 9c [decorated with hatchings and inscribed lines].

D N Marshall 1979.

Two carved stone balls from Kemnay were noted by the Ordnance Survey in 1969 in a joint display in Aberdeen Regional Museum. This display included material drawn from the collections of several museums, including Aberdeen City Museum and Art Gallery, Marischal Museum and Inverurie Museum. The display has since closed and the material has been dispersed, but the OS surveyors did not record any accessions numbers and there is now no easy way of identifying to which museum the carved stone balls belonged.

Information from RCAHMS (JRS), 15 October 2003.
