Archaeology Notes

NJ70SE 6 79 00.

The Forest of Drum (name 'Old Wood or Forest of Drum': NJ 790 008) is mentioned in a charter of 1203 x 1214. Within it lay the important royal Park of Drum, to which there are numerous references in charters, beginning in 1323. This Park was granted to Alexander Irvine of Drum in 1506/7, the grant being ratified in 1685. (In this context, a park was an enclosed game reserve surrounded by a ditch and bank, on top of which was a palisade.)
