Archaeology Notes

NS87NE 103.00 NS 8696 7935.

This demolished lock was supplied with a side-pond (NS87NE 103.01). At the point where it joined the main canal the remains of a gate are visible.

RCAHMS 1963.

This lock, which was 69 feet in length, 12 feet 6 inches in width and had a fall of 10 feet, was the top lock of a flight of eleven locks taking the canal down to Port Downie (NS88SE 171) on the Forth and Clyde Canal (NS88SE 110.00). The lock, which was closed and infilled in 1933, was supplied with water by a side reservoir (NS87NE 103.01). The canal was extended for 570 yards from this lock.

This was one of a flight of locks taking the canal down to the Forth and Clyde Canal (NS88SE 110.00) at Port Downie Basin (NS88SE 171).

This lock is clearly visible on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1864, sheet xxx) and on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Stirlingshire 1899, sheet xxx NW).
