'Monte de Magy' - the 'monte' probably being a motte -is mentioned as the messuage of Sir Alexander Dunbar of Westfield, in a charter of the 12th February 1505 (Reg Magni Sig Reg Scot 1984).
This charter is of extreme importance because it reveals the situation of the earliest manor place in the barony (of Carnousie). The site of this primitive fortalice, dating back no doubt to the time of the Thanes of Aberchirder, was evidently on the farm still known as Castlehill, above the head of the Burn of Maggie.
W D Simpson 1936; Reg Magni Sig Reg Scot 1984.
Mr Alexander Ogg, Castlehill farm, states that W D Simpson (Aberdeen University) believes that the site of this motte was probably at NJ 6443 5133 in the NE corner of an arable field where Mr Ogg has ploughed up traces of stone and lime on many occasions. Nothing was seen at this spot.
Visited by OS (WDJ) 15 September 1964.
