Archaeology Notes

NS56NE 2648 5587 6627, 5576 6637 to 5599 6614

Viaduct, Ferry Road, built c. 1873 for the North British Rly, carrying the line over Ferry Road, Pointhouse Shipbuilding Yard (NS56NE 1449), the River Kelvin, and the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Rly's branch to the Pointhouse yard. There are eight plate girder spans and a longer lattice girder span over the river.

Until c. 1964, an iron footbridge was cantilered from the S side of the viaduct.

J R Hume 1974.

This viaduct carries the electrified suburban railway line from central Glasgow (Central Station, Low Level) to Dumbarton and Helensburgh across Ferry Road and the River Kelvin, which here forms the boundary between the parishes of Govan (to the N) and Glasgow (to the S). The line was built by the Lanarkshire and Dunbarton Railway, a subsidiary of the North British Rly.

The available map evidence suggests that the structure extends from NS c. 55767 66370 to NS c. 55993 66148.
