Archaeology Notes

NX46NW 168 centred 4154 6558

A prisoner-of-war camp is visible at this location on RAF aerial photographs taken in 1945 (106G/UK 986: 4022-4023). Within the compound are 28 tightly grouped huts, with one larger hut to the S, possibly the latrine block. Some cultivated plots are visible at the S end of the camp, while at the N end the entrance is flanked by two formal gardens. To the N of the camp is the guard accomodation and to the S is an enclosed recreation ground and a sewage works.

Depicted as an 'Agricultural Hostel' on the OS 6" map (1957) and 'Caravan Site' on the OS 1:10000 map (1990).

This camp has been recorded in English Heritage Project Report. Twentieth Century Military Recording Project, Prisoner of War Camps (1939-1948), published by the National Monuments Records Centre, July 2003, R J C Thomas. The camp is noted as Holm Park Camp, Newton Stewart, camp No.113.

The camp site has now been built on.
